Job Title: Field Technician III
Department: Field Operations
Reports To: Field Operations Manager

Position Summary:
    Field Technician Level III should have the ability to accomplish all field operations roles in the KDL Network. This is typically a senior level experienced position.

Primary Responsibilites:
    • Install hardware, i.e., racks, bays, mount equipment in racks.
    • Run, lace, dress, wire wrap ABAM cable
    • Run, lace and dress DS3 cable, install BNC’s.
    • Run and lace power cable.
    • Terminate power cable with lugs.
    • Cross connection of all DS1, DS3, and Optical circuits.
    • Access, provision, and align all components of the network such as network elements (NE), amplifiers, muxes, hubs, etc.
    • Act as eyes and hands during troubleshooting for the NOC for such tasks as card swaps and jumper moves.
    • Fiber route maintenance to include visual inspection along with cable locating. Must have solid understanding of the use and operations of LOCATER.
    • Presence and coordination of emergency fiber restorations.
    • Must have solid understanding in the use and operation of OTDR’s to perform monthly trace recording of spare fibers along the routes and to trouble shoot network problems.
    • Must be able to safely operate a 4 wheel drive vehicle/truck.
    • Must be able to safely use basic hand tools.
    • Some heavy lifting of equipment and hand hole/manhole lids required up to 75 pounds.
    • Perform scheduled PM’s on HVAC, fixed and portable generators, DC power plant, fire suppression systems, environmental alarm systems, and optical transport equipment.
    • Document and maintain records for splice locations, splice loss and cable changes for assigned areas and submissions to engineering and CAD departments.
    • Inspection and maintenance of equipment shelter exteriors.
    • Coordination and delivery of generator fuel.
    • Vehicle maintenance to the point of a state of readiness at all times.
    • 24X7 on call unless on vacation or specified ahead for requested time off.
    • Maintenance technicians will take direction from NOC personnel when trouble shooting and turning up of new circuits and equipment.

      Education/Training/Experience:
        • High School diploma.
        • Technical school, military equivalent, or college degree desirable.
        • 5-10 years experience working with telecommunications, networking, and or technological solutions in a business environment.
        • In-depth experience in OSP fiber cable locating, protection, and maintenance.
        • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record required.

        • Thorough understanding of the operation and use of OTDR’s, fiber locators, DS1/DS3/optical test sets, VOMs, and other test equipment.
        • Ability to understand complex issues and learn quickly

      Working Conditions:
        • Works in field operations environment, cable routes, regeneration huts and customer collocation sites.
        • Must be able and willing to work in inclement weather conditions.
        • Exposure to high noise levels, chemicals, physical hazards, moving equipment.
        • Frequently works outdoors.
        • Able to be on call 24X7.
        • Willingness to work on evenings, weekends, and holidays, and extended hours as required by workload.

      Visual Acuity:
        • Able to distinguish colors normally

      Physical Demand:
        • Stand, squat, walk, push, pull, climb, reach overhead, and bend to the floor
        • Lift 20 to 75 pounds occasionally.
        • Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
        • Able to walk distances occasionally.
        • Ability to monitor sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.
